Description
Benares Cutwork Brocade Sari, India, Mid 20th C. Silk brocade in olive green, adorned with diagonal rows of stylized flowers, all within a narrow border of similar design, distinguishes this piece. Benares (or Varanasi, its old name) stands as the renowned center of the Indian brocade weaving industry. In many Benares brocades, the supplementary threadwork is woven as floats across the back. These threads are maintained until the sari is purchased, at which point the trader will have them cut away, hence the name "cutwork sari." Size: 16'0'' x 3'8'' (488 x 112 cm). Provenance: Ex Yosi Barzilai collection.
