Item Details
Description
Two Fergana Embroidered Hats, Margilan, Uzbekistan. Early/Mid 20th C. Hats like these have become the most common headwear in the Fergana Valley, as well as in other parts of Uzbekistan. They have evolved into a national symbol not only for Uzbekistan but also for Tajikistan and Kirghizstan. The intricate design on these hats often carries mysterious meanings. Some locals in the Valley refer to it as 'kalampir,' which symbolizes hot chili peppers, while others interpret it as a representation of sperm, signifying the fertility of men. It is also known as 'bodom,' signifying the almond symbol that represents fertility and life. The majority of Fergana Valley hats are made in black and dark shades of blue and green. Green holds significance in Islam as it represents the color of the Prophet Mohammad's coat. Sizes: 1) 3.5'' x 6.5'' x 6'' (9 x 17 x 15 cm) to 2) 4.5'' x 6.5'' x 6'' (11 x 17 x 15 cm). See Plate 138, Hats on the Silk Road, Russell S. Fling, 2015. Provenance: The Collection of Russell S. and Dona Fling, Columbus, OH.
