Description
Ancient Near East, Northwestern Iran / Turkey, Luristan, late Bronze to Iron Age, ca. 2000 to 600 BCE. A collection of 17 ancient bronze artifacts from the Near East; personal adornments, jewelry, and fragmentary pieces that once formed the handles or pommels of swords and daggers. Ten are pins, used for holding hair and /or clothing in place, all with different flourishes and details - one has a loophole- so possibly used for sewing. Three are bracelets, all unique - one delicate wire with an intricate coiled terminals that form a clasp; another braided; and the third is a thick and heavy cuff. The two conical pommels, tiered handle, and handle with recessed area for inlaying bone or a wood grip ? are from bladed weapons that belonged to and may have been buried with warriors. Size: 3.5" L x 1.5" W (8.9 cm x 3.8 cm)
Provenance: private Everett, Massachusetts, USA collection; pommel & handle acquired from DRG Coins & Antiquities, UK, in 2016; pins & cuffs acquired from Artemis Gallery April 24th 2017, lot # 20; ex-Estate of John Piscopo. Mr. Piscopo was one of the largest collectors of ancient weapons in the US with a collection that spanned all cultures, all ages.
