Item Details
Description
Central Asia, Tibet, Himalaya Region, ca. mid-20th century CE. A ceremonial mala garland made of gilt brass heads attached to cotton and silk brocade panels. This garland adornment was worn by Buddhist dancers / monks during ceremonies honoring Mahakala, the heads representing vanquished demons and Citipati skulls. The heads are hollow with openwork mouths, fanged teeth, and repousse and chased details painted with black, lacquer red, and gold gilding. Some faces are snarling, some have eyes popping out and drooping from the sockets. Despite their intense and grim appearance, the skulls and the distended eyeballs symbolize impermanence, death, and wisdom- as well as the various organs, tissues, and bones that make up the five senses. Citipati skeletons also protect the Dharma (Buddhist teachings) from forces of dejection and ignorance. Size of cloth laid flat: 30" L (76.2 cm); largest head: 4.5" L x 4.5" W (11.4 cm x 11.4 cm); gold quality: 1.4% to 1.8%
