Item Details
Description
This spectacular Kano School 6-panel Byobu screen depicts the Spring and Summer seasons during the cultivation of rice and probably dates to the 17th century. Under Confucianism in China, agriculture was considered the basis of an orderly society; therefore, after this motif made its way to Japan in the Muromachi period (1336-1573), the ruling class ordered many paintings in this motif. Originally one of a pair in the Kano style, the screen is framed in Negoro lacquer with intricate bronze hardware. 47.75" x 112"
