Description
In Korean mythology and the Buddhist world, the Ten Kings of Hell judge the lives of the deceased and determine their punishment as well as their cycle of rebirth. This rare painting depicts Taesan, the Seventh King of Hell, and originally formed part of a set of ten scrolls. Seated prominently in the center, the king is surrounded by a retinue of attendants and significant figures of the underworld, including messengers, judges, and wardens. The dead, receiving punishments for their transgressions, populate the lower half of the painting. Joseon Dynasty, 18th century. Framed 67 x 38.5 inches
