Description

Pair of Rev. John Wesley Reverse Glass Portraits

A pair of reverse glass paintings of Reverend John Wesley, based on two 18th-century engravings. Both measure approximately 9.25" x 12.5" (sight), N.p., n.d. The portraits are slightly dark, possibly from some tinting to the framing glass. Some wear and minor loss to the frames, else very good. They have not been inspected out of the frame.

The first is a portrait of a younger Wesley standing at a table, holding a book, while the Holy Bible rests atop the table. The engraving it is based on was done by John Faber Jr. from the original painting by John Michael Williams.

The second is of an older Wesley preaching beneath a tree, holding a book (likely the Bible). The engraving it is based on was done by John Greenwood from the original painting by Nathaniel Hone. The two are framed to slightly different sizes - 12.5" x 15.5" and 13.5" x 16" respectively.

While we believe the pair to be reverse glass paintings, the printed engraver's and painter's names can be visible at the very bottom of the first portrait, making us hesitate to conclusively say precisely what medium is being represented in these artworks. Regardless, they are both beautiful representations of the Methodist leader.

John Wesley (1703-1791) was an English cleric, theologian, and evangelist who led a revival movement within the Church of England known as Methodism. Although Wesley was barred from preaching in many parish churches during the early part of his ministry, he later became widely respected, and by the end of his life, was described as "the best-loved man in England."

Painter Nathaniel Hone, the Elder (1718-1784) was one of the founders of the Royal Academy in 1768. He gained popularity as a portrait and miniatures painter, and several of his works now hang in London's National Portrait Gallery. Among his clients are Button Gwinnett, Sir John Fielding, General Richard Wilford, and Methodist preacher John Wesley.
