Description
1748 Publication of John Wesley's Controversial 1744 "Scriptural Christianity" Sermon
A published sermon by English clergyman John Wesley. 24pp, measuring 3.75" x 6.25", Bristol, dated 1748. Printed by Felix Farley. A sixth edition of "Scriptural Christianity: A Sermon Preached August 24, 1744 at St. Mary's Church in Oxford Before the University by John Wesley."The publication has moderate toning and foxing to the paper covers, with tears and chipping at the spine. Some toning and staining to internal pages. Soundly bound. Overall good.
A note to the Reader at the front of the publication, from Wesley, states "It was not my Design when I wrote, every to print the latter Part of the following Sermon. But the false and scurrilous Accounts of it which have been published, almost in every Corner of the Nation, constrain me to publish the whole, just as it was preached, that Men of Reason may judge for themselves."Â
Wesley's "Scriptural Christianity" was his final sermon preached at St. Mary's at Oxford University. It drew a great amount of controversy at the time because, while the theme of the piece was the work of the Holy Spirit in individuals, groups, and across the earth, Wesley made a point of calling out Oxford University's failures to live according to the teachings of the Scriptures. Unsurprisingly, his bluntness resulted in him never being invited to preach at St. Mary's again.
