Achilles Statius (also Aquiles Estaco - Portuguese, 1524-1581). 2 copper plate engravings of Socrates, published in Rome, 1569. A pair of 16th century copperplate engravings by Portuguese writer and humanist, Achilles Statius who lived in Rome from 1555 since he was secretary to the Pope. Both engravings depict herms of Socrates (469-399 BC) the founder of Attic philosophy as described in Jerome Eisenberg's accompanying descriptions and both appeared as plates in Statius' "Inlustrium viror vt extant in vrbe expressi vultus" (Rome, 1569). A special pair of portraits by Achilles Statius depicting Socrates, widely revered as the founder of Western philosophy and credited for being a pioneer of the ethical tradition of thought. Achilles Statius' alma maters include: University of Evora, University of Coimbra, Old University of Leuven, and University of Paris. An author, translator, and philologist, Achilles Statius is best known for his Latin commentary to Catullus which was published in 1566. While born Aquiles Estaco in Vidigueira in the Kingdom of Portugal, he moved to Rome in 1555, where he became secretary to the pope.

Both engravings are accompanied by a COA with an informative description signed by the late Jerome Eisenberg (1930-2022) who was the Director of Royal Athena.

Each engraving is hinged within a matte that opens upwards to reveal the complete sheet. Slight toning to sheets. Slight creases and stains to engravings as shown. Minor nicks/tears and stains to edges of sheets that do not impact central imagery. Vivid imagery and text. Both engravings are accompanied by a COA with an informative description signed by the late Jerome Eisenberg (1930-2022) who was the Director of Royal Athena.
