Description
Gelatin silver photograph of Chinese Qing and Republic period warlord, governor, artist, and important historical figure Yan Xishan in full military dress, mounted to page with calligraphy dedication to 'Justice David' and with calligraphy signature and red seal. Dated (below seal) Dec. 12, 1936. Upper right corner of photograph with notation in the print which translates: "36th Liberation Day Photography". Blindstamp at bottom of sheet translates "Kaimei Photography". Calligraphy and photo accompanied by a card and an envelope. The text on the envelope translates: " Airlift Group, Mr. Stafford, Restricted by the Communications office of the Taiyuan Office of Appeasement". The sheet which presumably came in the envelope translates: "Reservation will be held at 6:00 pm on December 13th. Seat: Set up: Zhengda Hotel East Building. Yan Xishan honors this order" (Translation may be rough or inaccurate; please see text in photos.) Sheet with photo and calligraphy, approx. 11 1/2" x 8" Photograph approx. 7 3/4" x 5 1/2".
