Mali, Bamana or Malinke Peoples, Carved Wood Mask (koun), Ca. Early to Mid 20th C., H 22.5" W 7" Depth 6.75" | Fine geometric lines cross the face of the mask and the horns. Three diagonal openings on each side of the mouth may denote teeth. Mask combining animal and human traits called suruku, meaning “hyena,” most likely belonged to the Korè, one of six power associations shared by the Malinke and Bamana peoples. Masks such as these may have served as one of the symbols of the different Korè classes. Provenance: Property from a Bloomfield Township, MI private collection.
