Western Europe, probably Italy, Neoclassical period, ca. 19th century CE. A splendid pair of agate cameos each featuring the head of a classical female and set into a rose gold brooch with 2 circular bezels and a pin and clasp on the verso. Both surrounded by dotted borders, the 2 ladies confront one another, each presenting an elegant visage with a curly coiffure arranged in an ornate updo. Size of brooch: 2" L x 0.9" W (5.1 cm x 2.3 cm); of each intaglio (both about the same): 0.75" W (1.9 cm); gold quality: 75% gold (equivalent to 18 karats), 22% copper, 1.7% silver; weight: 7.9 grams
