Western Europe, probably England or France, Neoclassical Period, ca. 19th century CE. A beautiful tie pin with a slender, pointed body that emanates from the verso of an ovoid bezel. Within the bezel is a hand-carved carnelian cameo featuring the right-facing image of a whimsical woman, perhaps Venus (Greek Aphrodite), the goddess of love. The woman wears a flowing vestment and stands with her right arm above her head and her left draped down at her sides. Size: 2.46" H (6.2 cm); (setting): 0.39" W x 0.66" H (1 cm x 1.7 cm); (cameo): 0.2" W x 0.46" H (0.5 cm x 1.2 cm); metal quality: 45.9% gold, 37% copper, 13% silver; weight: 1.3 grams
