Description
**Originally Listed At $250**

North America, United States, New York, ca. 1913 CE. A first edition of "The Abysmal Brute" written by Jack London (American, 1876 to 1916) in 1910 and published by The Century Company in 1913. Comprised of 169 pages with an illustrated frontispiece by Gordon Grant (American, 1875 to 1962), the classic novella boasts an olive-green cloth cover stamped with black and marigold abstract illustration and lettering on front and spine. The fine tale tells the story of an outsider to society who, after being raised in a log cabin, finds success as a boxer, and realizes the corrupt practices of professional boxing. As "The Abysmal Brute" was written when London was already famous and concerned that he had exhausted his ideas, the novella is based on several plot outlines he purchased from the writer Sinclair Lewis (American, 1885 to 1951), who was an avid fan of London that was just beginning his career. Size: 4.9" L x 1.3" W x 7" H (12.4 cm x 3.3 cm x 17.8 cm)

"The Abysmal Brute" first appeared in September 1911 in "Popular Magazine," but was subsequently published by The Century Company in this 1913 edition.

Born John Griffith Chaney, Jack London was an American novelist, journalist, and social activist who became one of the first American authors to gain international celebrity status. Considered an innovator of science fiction, London was a passionate advocate of unionization, workers' rights, and socialism. He is most famous for writing "The Call of the Wild" and "White Fang," both set in the Klondike Gold Rush which London joined at the age of 21 in 1897.
