Native American, California, Sacramento Valley, perhaps Chumash, ca. 19th century CE. A necklace strung with several dozen discoid shell beads, each with a drill suspension hole in the center. Dangling from the middle of the composition is a carved abalone shell fragment with rainbow-hued iridescence. Shell currency has been used by Native American tribes for thousands of years and continued to be used up through the 19th century. Size (necklace): 34.5" L (87.6 cm); (central pendant): 1.5" W x 1.875" H (3.8 cm x 4.8 cm)

Condition
Strung in modern times and wearable as shown. Shell beads and pendant are from the stated period; stringing is modern. Small nicks and light abrasions to some shell beads, otherwise intact and excellent. Great preservation to discoid forms of beads, and wonderful iridescence on central pendant.
