Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE; Ecuador, Jamacoaque (Jama Coaque) culture, ca. 500 CE. A fine gathering of 4 hand-built pottery whistles from two distinct Pre-Columbian cultures. First is a Jamacoaque whistle depicting a standing figure with ornate finery and a large hat. Next is a Colima brownware whistle depicting a lengthy bird with highly burnished surfaces. Last is a pair of standing Colima bird whistles with nubbin legs, conical heads, bulging eyes, and petite beaks. Size of largest (Colima bird): 1.375" W x 2.3" H (3.5 cm x 5.8 cm)
Provenance: ex-private Valencia, California, USA collection acquired around 1985

Condition
Largest Colima bird has restoration to proper left leg, with resurfacing and light adhesive residue along new material and break lines; remaining 3 whistles are intact and very good. All pieces have light encrustations and abrasions. All whistles still produce some sound, but not all are discernible musical notes.
