Item Details
Description
**Originally Listed At $250**

South Asia, India, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. This is an interesting wooden child's temple toy using a baluster table leg and additional pieces of wood and brass to create a clever wheeled elephant and storage container. The wooden wheels rotate freely on simple axel rods and repousse brass caps decorate the iron nails. The table leg is cut lengthwise down the center then the interior is hollowed out to create a very shallow compartment, the narrow foot end is nailed together, and the top half swivels open for a limited storage space for small trinkets. At the tip is an elephant's head which helps transform this simple cannon like leg into a more attractive toy for a child. Such toys were popular in temples to occupy children while their parents attended worship. Size: 16" L x 4" W x 4.75" H (40.6 cm x 10.2 cm x 12.1 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-Wailuku Gallery, Hawaii, USA
