Central Asia, Himalayan region, Tibet / Nepal, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A collection of 5 Buddhist devotional pieces: a cast brass lion / tiger lying on a wood pedestal, a miniature brass phurba dagger and chop seal, a wood offering bowl with nickel-brass rims and repousse base and reverse painted resin prayer beads strung on a cotton cord with a tassel. The chop seal and phurba are pierced for suspension and strung together on a cord, the seal face is engraved with a dorje symbol. The repousse on the offering bowl contains auspicious Buddhist symbols. The reverse technique to paint each bead from the inside, is a very difficult technique to master. Using a thin brush inserted through the pierced holes, the artist literally painted backwards on the interior tiny portraits and Chinese characters!
