Roman, Imperial period, ca. early to mid-2nd century CE. A wonderful bronze fibula of the sawfish variety - a type distinguished by a set of integrally molded "teeth" to each side of the bow, as well as enameling decorations over the full length of the body. Size: 1" W x 1.7" H (2.5 cm x 4.3 cm); 3.2" H (8.1 cm) on included custom stand.
This piece has been published in "Ancient brooches and other artefacts : a fourth selection of brooches together with some other antiquities from the author's collection" by Richard Harrarr (Oxford: Oxbow, 1989), number 30.
Provenance: ex-Royal Athena Galleries, New York City, New York, USA; ex-Sotheby's London, December 1990; ex-Richard Hattatt collection

Condition
Loss to top loop, end of right arm, and enamel decoration along body. Pin does not move inhibiting function. Some chipping to teeth and nicks and abrasions commensurate with age. Rich patina throughout.
