Ancient Etruscan Bronze Fibula
Ancient Etruscan Bronze Fibula
Item Details
Description
Classical World, Central Italy, Etruria, Etruscan culture, ca. 600 to 400 BCE. A beautiful cast-bronze fibula of a grand, U-shaped form with a thick body. The upper terminal curls around on itself before ending in a sizable, H-shaped pin clasp decorated with a trio of parallel lines on the obverse, and the coiled lower terminal held a lengthy pin at one time. Fibulae like this example were used as stylized clothing pins to cinch closed long, flowing garments worn by wealthy or aristocratic Etruscans. Thick layers of green and brown patina have formed across this piece and imbue it with a classical presentation evocative of ancient Etruria! Size: 5.125" L x 3.1" W (13 cm x 7.9 cm)

Provenance: East Coast collection, New York Gallery, New York City, New York, USA, acquired before 2010
