Description
Spanish school of the early twentieth century. After MIGUEL JACINTO MELÉNDEZ (Oviedo, 1679-Madrid, 1734).
"The Holy Family".
Oil on canvas of circular format.
Frame in carved and gilded wood.
Measurements: 120 cm (diameter without frame); 143 cm (diameter with frame).
The canvas in bidding follows the faithful models of the homonymous painting made by Miguel Jacinto Meléndez, today conserved in the Prado Museum. The Spanish art gallery defines it as follows: "The motif of the sleeping Baby Jesus is a traditional image that prefigures his death. It is observed by Joseph and Mary, who is surrounded by the roses that symbolize her. St. John the Baptist holds the child to prevent him from waking up his son". As for its authorship, he continues "When it entered the Museum's collection this canvas was attributed to the still life painter Luis Meléndez, but it was later catalogued as a late work by his uncle, Miguel Jacinto, Philip V's chamber painter".
