Description
Edward Scrope Shrapnel (1847-1920). A watercolour of a native camp scene showing a birchbark canoe on the shore and a hunter carrying a stag to his awaiting family. Born in England, Shrapnel lived for a brief time in Quebec before moving to Orillia, Ontario, in 1865 where he resided for 29 years. In 1889 he moved to Victoria, British Columbia, where he lived until his death in 1920. His works can be found in the BC Provincial Archives, the Musee de Quebec, the Glenbow Museum and the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. The painting is professionally mounted in a period frame. Signed front lower right, "E. Shrapnel, Orillia, 1875". Sight 11" x 16". Frame: 27.75" x 32" x 3.75".
