Description
Coming Out: A Letter to a Rosebud of Two Generations Ago Now Inscribed to a Bud of Today From the Same Shoot by Mark Twain. Privately printed Christmas 1921. One of 200 copies printed for Thomas Nast Fairbanks by the Marchbanks Press. Original quarter vegetable vellum, lavender boards, paper label, top edge gilt. A fine crisp copy. This is the first printing of a famous letter sent by Mark Twain in 1876 to "Mother" Fairbanks when her daughter was born. Twain met Mrs. Fairbanks during his Quaker City voyage and they became close friends; Twain wrote her intimate letters revealing his innermost feelings for the next three decades. Although she was only seven years his senior, Twain considered Mrs. Fairbanks a mentor, and an arbiter of social grace, and nicknamed her "Mother." This scarce volume was privately printed as a Christmas greeting by the Fairbanks family. BAL 3533
