Description: 16pp. (with the last page unused). Printed forms of lined blue paper filled out in ink. 34.5x21.2 cm (13½x8¼”), conjugate leaves sewn together with thread. [with] Manuscript circular stating that ”Asian settlers could not be rehired if their employers did not deliver their first contracts to the judge where they were located.” With official seal. 2 pp. on 4-page conjugate. 20 July 1867. [and with] Two death certificates for Chinese laborers from Canton, issued by the ”Real Hospital de Caridad de S. Felipe y Santiago.” (With large wormholes, repaired). 1871 & 1875.
Four hundred and eighteen Chinese laborers bound for Cuba aboard the Spanish ship ”Alaieza(?)” are listed, with their age and town or city of origin given. There are also boarding numbers (”Nos. de bordo”) for each passenger listed in order. Signed and dated on the final page by José de Aguilar, the Spanish consul at Macau. The manifest is in unusually good condition, the paper not brittle and with just a little oxidation of the ink causing slight fading to the paper in places. The three additional documents add context and interest relating to the Chinese labor experience in Cuba at the time.
