Description
Possibly after the illustrations in the book by Victor Hugo, published in 1831, with engravings by Nicolas Eustache Maurin (1799-1850). Oil on canvas, laid to board, depicting Djali the goat doing his magic trick for Esmeralda by spelling out her lover's name Phoebus, which he overhears from the background; PLUS Esmeralda showing her compassion for Quasimodo by giving him water during his excoriation in front of the Cathedral. In matching gold reticulated frames, OS: 8" x 6 1/2", SS: 5 1/2" x 4", minor flaking.
