Description
Ancient Near East / Central Asia, Turkey / Northwestern Iran, Marlik or Cheragh-Ali Teppe region, Amlash / Amardi culture, Iron Age period, ca. 1200 to 800 BCE. A beautiful example of a sizable grayware pottery vase, perhaps a pouring pitcher based on the sturdy handle. The exterior of the body is incised with dozens of fine vertical striations that create a wavy, personalized motif while the shoulder and neck exhibit pleasantly smooth, stone-burnished surfaces. Amlash vessels were buried in large megalithic tombs, built by part of the Marlik culture. Despite its proximity to the large Mesopotamian cultures, the geographical barrier of the high Zagros and Elburz Mountains kept it relatively isolated and a very unique ceramic tradition developed there. Size: 7.25" L x 7" W x 10.625" H (18.4 cm x 17.8 cm x 27 cm)
