[Pacific Collections caption] 39. VERAMIN (?) RUG, 19th century, 3?5? x 7?9?. Rugs of this type, showing what appear to be large, simplified renditions of Turkoman guls, have long posed a labeling challenge. Recently they have come to be associated with the Veramin region, where a variety of nomadic groups winter. These include Kurds, Shahsevans, Lurs, and even small Afshar, Baluchi, and Bakhtiari elements. This is a region requiring more study.
WARP: wool, dark gray, 2 strands, Z-spun, S-plied.
WEFT: wool, red and natural brown, 3 shoots single strand Z-spun in the shame shed. May be 3 ply untwisted wool.
PILE: wool, 2 strands, Z-spun, S-plied.
KNOT: symmetrical, h. 8, v. 8, 64/sq. inch.
EDGES: plain weave bands with lines of coarse weft-float.
ENDS: brown wool kilim.
COLORS (8): dark blue field, pale red, red-brown, light green, deep purple, yellow brown, ivory, brown-black.
FROM THE COLLECTION OF: Linda and Ralph Kaffel.
