Item Details
Description
Shekarlu Qashgai Carpet, South Persia, late 19th century
8 ft. 4 in. x 5 ft. 6 in.

Provenance: John C. Edelmann Galleries, New York, 11 December 1979, Lot 19.

Other Notes: According to James Opie (Tribal Rugs) it is the distinctive border of linked diamonds that helps identify Shekarlu rugs of the Qashqai. The blue ground, as here, is the most common, the ivory ground most prized (Tribal Rugs pl. 10:7 & 10:8) and the red ground the rarest (Woven Gardens pl. 4). The seemingly random placement of motifs which include small animals, various stars and geometric motifs separated by diagonal pronged tree forms is unique to Shekarlu carpets.
