Description
A seated male retablo figure, Quimbaya culture, Middle Cauca River area, Colombia, 800-1200 CE, buff hollow earthenware with traces of black paint. The imposing seated figure in classic pose with arms held to the chest area and possibly once holding an offering in the right hand. Wearing a headband with knotted or tufted feather ends. The nude figure possibly once adorned with a gold/ tumbaga nose ring. In fine condition, broken at neck and leg area with restoration over the break lines. 13-1/2" in height. Private Florida collection acquired prior to 1970.
