Description
Oil on canvas measuring: 60 x 70 cm. Valentin de Zubiaurre Aguirrezabal was a Basque painter who was born deaf and mute. He is the older brother of Ramon de Zubiaurre, also Basque, also a painter and also deaf and son of the composer Valentin de Zubiaurre Urionabarrenechea. Curious that a musician father has two deaf children, although both Valentin and Ramon channeled his talent into the art of painting. Originally from Bizkaia, the Zubiaurre family lived in Madrid, since his father worked there. Valentin studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando and between 1905 and 1906 he traveled to Paris and other parts of Europe. As he had talent, he was able to sell paintings in that 19th century era, counting on the invaluable help of his sister, Pilar de Zubiaurre, who acted as an agent, organizing exhibitions in the most important cities of Europe and America, as well as in Japan. . He barely left the so-called Basque regionalist painting. In the words of Jose Ortega y Gasset, his work was a lyrical inventory of Basque existence. He showed friezes of monumental figures, Basque types, especially peasants and sailors. He also portrayed the people of Segovia. His work is characterized by being colorful, and the masterful use of textures, tones and volumes of his characters, the vast majority portraying Basque folklore from the beginning of the century. Provenance: important private Basque collection, Barcelona-Donostia.
