Description
An exquisitely carved piece of jade, this artifact represents the pinnacle of Chinese stone craftsmanship, likely from the Ming Dynasty. The dark jade, punctuated with mottled inclusions that tell of its earthly origins, has been transformed into a canvas showcasing a powerful and mythical being. The visage carved into the stone may depict a protective deity, common in Chinese lore and often used to ward off evil spirits. The reverse side's smooth finish contrasts the deeply etched, animated features, a balance of yin and yang, underscoring the philosophical underpinnings of the era's aesthetic.
