Description
Arthur Waagen (German, 1833-1898). Bust of Algerian. Painted spelter relief. Signed "Waagen" in lower left. A wonderful spelter relief plaque depicting the bust of an Algerian male cast from a model by the German sculptor Arthur Waagen. Lavishly adorned, the figure is shown in three-quarters position in a Moorish arch wearing a prominent turban and layers of jewelry. Arthur Waagen was a German sculptor and animalier, a member of the 19th-century movement specializing in the realistic portrayal of animals. Celebrated in his time for his Orientalist cast bronze sculptures, the artist frequently depicted imagery associated with North African Muslim culture, as seen in this example.
