Description
Central Asia, Eastern Iran / Afghanistan, Bactria, ca. 2000 to 1500 BCE. A handsome gray chlorite schist censer vessel with a cuboid body and elongated handle in the form of an animal. The center is drilled into a circular basin, with cut ridges and incised linear motifs, and rests on four low, square feet. The zoomorphic head has concentric circles and etched grooves for the snout and ears. Possibly used as a sturdy oil lamp or incense burner, the animal may represent a bull or other bovid. Size: 5.75" L x 3" W x 2.5" H (14.6 cm x 7.6 cm x 6.4 cm)
