Description
Watercolor on paper, circa 1890s. Unsigned. Dimensions: 5" x 10". Mounted on mat board. Framed under glass 14" x 19". Wood panel backing. This unsigned 19th century watercolor was on view in the recent Bert Gallery exhibit – "Collector’s Choice: The Providence School" featuring the collection of Thomas and Teresa Russell. Purchased in the 1970’s, it became part of a collection to preserve painting of many overlooked American regional artists that would have been lost or destroyed in New England attics and basements. As with most unsigned works, the authorship cannot be determined. This is a well-executed and thoughtful work and could be by one of the many talented Providence School landscape artists. It is reminiscent of Edward Bannister’s watercolors that have sold in the past through Swann Galleries. A small intimate study by an artist as he meandered around Rhode Island.
