Description
This steatite figure, glazed to create an ethereal blue-green sheen, represents Ptah, the creator god of Memphis in ancient Egyptian mythology. His tight-fitting cap and straight beard are hallmark features of his iconography. Standing upon a hieroglyphic-inscribed base, Ptah's form is both simplified and stylized, suggesting a blend of reverence and approachability. The artisans of the 18th Dynasty were masters of creating such votive pieces, which allowed the beholder to maintain a personal connection with the divine. This particular figure likely held an amuletic function, meant to invoke Ptah's creative powers and blessings of craftsmanship and architecture. The wear and remaining glaze patina suggest a history of intimate handling and veneration.
