Item Details
Description
These two poetry books are titled "Maud", written by Alfred Lord Tennyson, and "The Poetical Works of John Keats" edited by H. Buxton Forman. Tennyson (1809 - 1892) was an English poet and Poet Laureate during much of Queen Victoria's reign, his book "Maud" was first published in 1855 ("Maud and Other Poems") and was edited here by George Goodchild as part of the Miniature Classics series; it was published in London by Jarrold & Sons, with no date, but circa 1914, and printed at the Empire Press in London. The other books in the series included Browning's "Pippa Passes", "Browning's "A Blot in the 'Scutcheon', Coleridge's "The Ancient Mariner", Goldsmith's "The Deserted Village", and Shelley's "The Sensitive Plant", and all are uniform with this volume of "Maud". The book is small and has four raised bands, gilt lettering and a gilt decoration on the spine, beautiful calf covers, blank endpapers with gilt dentelles, it was bound by Zaehnsdorf in London and published by Jarrold & Sons in London around 1914, it is 92 pages long, including the title page and preface, and all the edges are gilt. The Keats title was edited by H. Buxton Forman and comes in an exquisite binding by Riviere, It was published by the Oxford University Press in 1925 and has five raised bands, six gilt-ruled compartments, gilt lettering and elaborate gilt tooling on the spine, the covers have double gilt-fillet borders and a design in the center that is stunning, wide gilt dentelles with marbled endpapers, "Bound By Riviere" in small letters at the bottom of the first blank endpaper, a frontis portrait of John Keats from a drawing by Severn, a tissue guard and the title page, a Prefatory Note, five pages of Contents with two illustrations listed on page viii of the Contents, a long Introduction that runs from ix to lvi, eight pages of Type Fac-simile Titles of Keats's Three Books, a List of Principal Works Consulted (lxv - lxxxii), a photo of Haydon's life mask of Keats, 486 pages of text, an Index of First Lines that runs to page 491, all the edges are gilt, the book comes in a red slipcase, and the binding by Riviere is second to none. John Keats (1795 - 1821) was an English poet of the second generation of Romantic poets, along with Lord Byron and Percy Bysshe Shelley. His poems had been in publication for less than four years when he died of tuberculosis at the age of 25. They were indifferently received in his lifetime, but his fame grew rapidly after he died. By the end of the century, he was placed in the pantheon of English literature and strongly influenced many writers afterwards. Typical of the Romantics, he accentuated extreme emotion through natural imagery, and today his poems and letters remain among the most popular and most analyzed in English literature, in particular "Ode to a Nightingale", "Ode on a Grecian Urn", "Sleep and Poetry" and the sonnet "On First Looking into Chapman's Homer". Maud measures 5 x 3 1/4 in, wide and has a tight binding and clean pages and text. "The Poetical Works of John Keats" is 8vo. and measures 7 3/4 x 5 3/8 in. wide, with a tight binding and clean pages and text, a speck of rubbing at the heel and crown and even less at the tips, and it comes with a slipcase that is in very good condition. The book is in an exquisite binding by Riviere - everyone should own a book with a binding like this one - it will knock your socks off - and it is just exquisite exquisite exquisite. #109 #1643
