Item Details
Description
For your consideration is this Wagon Wheel Saloon and Gambling Hall thermometer from The Show Place in State Line, Nevada circa 1940-50s. Harvey Gross opened Harvey?s Wagon Wheel Saloon and Gambling Hall in 1944. The original gaming there, according to the Tahoe Daily Tribune, consisted of just two card tables and three slots. It also featured the area's only 24-hour gas pump. In an attempt to attract customers, Harvey and his wife Llewellyn constructed a skating rink in the parking lot during the winter. It was Nevada's first high-rise hotel when it opened in the 1960s. There was a bomb?set off in the hotel?on August 27, 1980 by?a disheartened gambler who owed several casinos a minimum of $1 million. In a plan to demand $3 million, he attempted to take over the Lake Tahoe region. The hotel and casino were damaged by the bomb, affecting three floors, but no injuries or deaths occurred. Though Harvey Gross passed away in 1983, the Lake Tahoe resort remained in the family. In 2001, Harrah?s Entertainment, now Caesars Entertainment, acquired the hotel and casino. The thermometer shows a white background with a colored scene showing a buffalo skull and a wagon wheel in a desert environment. Around the edge of the thermometer, it shows numbers from -50 to 130. The middle of the thermometer reads, "Wagon Wheel Saloon and Gambling Hall / The Show Place on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe / State Line, Nevada" in red and black lettering. At the top in small black lettering it reads, "Made in U.S.A.". The thermometer shows good condition overall with some slight wear present but no signs of obvious damage are present. It measures 12 1/8" in diameter and 1 3/4" in depth. It weighs 1 pound and 14 ounces.
