Item Details
Description
For your consideration is this First Edition of "More Tramps Abroad" or "Following the Equator" by Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens), 1897, Chatto & Windus, London publisher. First UK Edition. "This is the English edition of Following the Equator, with significant textual differences: it contains 6,000 words deleted from the American edition, deletes 1,400 words found in the American edition, and has different chapter divisions. BAL states that this English edition preceded the American edition by a few days. This edition was 5,000 copies per the C & W ledgers." Following the Equator is a non-fiction social commentary in the form of a travelogue published by Mark Twain in 1897. Twain was practically bankrupt in 1894 due to investing heavily into the failed Paige Compositor. In an attempt to extricate himself from debt of $100,000 (equivalent of about $2,975,000 in 2020) he undertook a tour of the British Empire in 1895 at age 60, a route chosen to provide numerous opportunities for lectures in English. Throughout the novel, Twain uses the opportunity of visiting the various locations on his tour to espouse "perceptive descriptions and discussions of people, climate, flora and fauna, indigenous cultures, religion, customs, politics, food, and many other topics". The novel contains a significant amount of social commentary, although much of it is done in a satirical manner. This burgundy cloth bound gold gilt scalloped stamped hardcover is in nice condition, scuffing and fading to cover and edges. Intact gold gilt top edge and fore & bottom edge deckled pages exhibit age tanning and minimal foxing. Measures 5.5"W x 7.75"L x 1.5"D, weight 1lb.
