Description
Dorothy Norman (1905-1997) Torso, Gaston Lachaise, at An American Place, New York, 1946 Gelatin silver print; signed 'Dorothy Norman; in ink on the verso, with pencil annotations and artist's stamp in ink; mounted. 3 1/2 x 2 3/16 in. (8.9 x 5.5 cm) Footnotes: N.B. In Dorothy Norman's photograph of Gaston Lachaise's alabaster Torso [LF 336], 1924, the sensuous forms of the sculpture seem to be caressed by light and shadow. The Torso—a high relief—was owned by her lover, Alfred Stieglitz (1864-1946), from 1927 until his death. It had appeared in Lachaise's exhibition at Stieglitz's famous Intimate Gallery, New York, in early 1927, and Stieglitz purchased it soon after the show. It was prominently displayed in Stieglitz's own room, off the main room of his subsequent gallery, An American Place, New York, and is now owned by the Chicago Institute of Art, Alfred Stieglitz Collection. This photograph, taken in 1946, is one of a number that Norman took of the work in that year, suggesting that she had invested it with her profound feelings about its first owner. Another print of this photograph is owned by the Philadelphia Museum of Art. -Virginia Budny, author of the forthcoming catalogue raisonné sponsored by the Lachaise Foundation For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com For further information about this lot please visit the lot listing
