Description

acquired prior to 1953, comprising: small vase with tapered neck, 4-1/8 x 4-3/4 in.; tripod vessel, 3-1/4 x 4-5/8 in.

Provenance: Ambassador Capus Miller Waynick, North Carolina; by descent in family

Note: Mr. Capus Miller Waynick acquired this collection of Pre Columbian pottery while he served as U.S. Ambassador to Nicaragua from 1949-1951 and Columbia from 1951-1953. Mr. Waynick was appointed to these positions by President Harry Truman in recognition of his assistance in the 1948 campaigns. In 1951 he would temporarily return to the U.S. to organize President Truman's Point IV program, which aimed to aid and revitalize underdeveloped nations. Mr. Waynick received all of the pottery offered here as gifts from the local people during his ambassadorship.

surface dirt/accretion, wear and loss commensurate with age and use; vase with scattered cracks and chips to rim and base; vessel lacking head (evidence of old break visible), chip and crack to rim
