La sfera [& Trattato dell'uso della Sfera], 2 parts in 1, the first translated by Danti, first editions, first title with woodcut Medici arms on a globe, second title with woodcut astrolabe, woodcut diagrams and decorative initials, part 2 C2 small part torn from lower blank corner, some spotting or foxing, lightly browned, [Adams P2137; Houzeau & Lancaster 913; Riccardi I, 391; Alden 572/54 'Danti's annotations include refs to Columbus and the New World'], Florence, [Heirs of Bernardo] Giunti, 1573 bound with Piccolomini (Alessandro) Della grandezza della terra et dell'acqua, second edition, woodcut printer's device to title and verso of otherwise blank f., woodcut diagrams and decorative initials, some staining to title, occasional spotting, lightly browned, [Houzeau & Lancaster 2493; Riccardi II, 273, Alden 558/36 'on lf 9 is a discussion of western discoveries and, on verso of lf 28, of New Spain, Yucatan, and Peru'], Venice, Giordano Ziletti, 1561, together 3 works in 1 vol., ornately blind-stamped Spanish dark green armorial morocco, rebacked, preserving original backstrip in compartments (with some loss at ends) with remains of later paper title label, corners worn, rubbed, small 4to*** An excellent sammelband. I: First editions of Danti's translation of this influential astronomical text by Proclus, and his own treatise on the use of the astrolabe, which was the first book on the subject published in Italy. Danti taught at the University of Pisa, and was Cosmographer to the Medici court. II: Second edition of Piccolomini's work opposing the Aristotelian and Ptolemaic views that water was more extensive than land. Both works include references to the Americas.
