Item Details
Description
Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Highlands region, Huli / Egan Culture, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A rare disc shaped headdress wig made of human hair and cloth over a wood frame rim. The top is flat with a black pitch added to the center and the underside tapers slightly to a shallow indentation for placing on the wearer's head with some loosely woven gauze covering this area. The densely packed hair fibers are colored in red ochre. Hair is an important status symbol among indigenous Papua New Guinea cultures - growing hair for wigs is common amongst men in the highlands and they apprentice with wig makers, cultivating their own hair for the headdresses. Sprinkling water on the hair, shaping the curls, diet, headrests while sleeping, seclusion from women, and magic are believed to encourage quicker growth. Red ochre clay, known as hare, is used to color wigs, clothing, and skin as both decoration and sun protection. Size: 17" Diameter x 2" W (43.2 cm x 5.1 cm); 34" H (86.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Rochester, Michigan, USA collection, acquired 1980
