Description
Native American, Southwestern United States, Mimbres-Mogollon (Anasazi / Ancestral Puebloan), ca. 1050 to 1100 CE. A hand built pottery bowl, with a deep, hemispherical form, and a corrugated, highly textured exterior. The corrugated impressions form a band just under the rim to the midsection; carefully indented with the potter's finger or tool at regular intervals. Since vessels like this one were utilitarian, it is thought this texture may have aided in gripping the bowl when wet. Marking the center is a kill hole which researchers believe was ritually punctured prior to placing the vessel over the face of a deceased individual - perhaps this bowl was used in life by the owner as well as in death. Size: 9.75" Diameter x 4" H (24.8 cm x 10.2 cm)
