Jamacoaque Polychrome Figural, Mother Holding Child
Jamacoaque Polychrome Figural, Mother Holding Child
Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Jamacoaque, ca. 1st to 5th century CE. A very special maternal depiction comprised of a seated mother holding her infant across her lap, both are elaborately decorated with ornaments and liberal remains of orange, red, and green pigments. The woman's headdress is comprised of an elaborate, multi-layered chinstrap, a bulbous, crested top section, and a pair of straps that fall onto her broad shoulders. Seated in what appears to be a wicker chair, the mother places both hands on her infant who sits atop her skirt facing forward. Though bare-chested, multiple armbands, bracelets, and necklaces adorn her body. The child similarly wears a sizable headdress and earrings. The finery on the baby demonstrates how important children were in society. Size: 3.9" L x 4" W x 6.5" H (9.9 cm x 10.2 cm x 16.5 cm)

Jama Coaque figures stand apart from those of other coastal sites of the period in that they are typically more richly clothed and elaborately adorned. Mold-made with appliqu? decorations made in smaller molds, most are freestanding like this example. The backs of the figures were made by hand and not as well finished indicating that the figures were intended to be viewed from the front. Dress and ornament signified clans and ethnic groups as well as rank among the ancient peoples. Elements of clothing and jewelry were encoded with information that members of those societies would have understood.
