Description
Selection of five American molded thermoplastic gutta percha daguerreotype Union cases, some with images, 1850s, comprising a case with scrolled cartouche and gilded and velvet fitted interior, a rectangular case with scrolled foliate detail and empty interior, an A.P. Critchlow & Co. case with figural Colonial type decoration and two John Judson Boynton studio (Clinton, MA) ambrotype images of a husband and wife with a patent date of June 1854, a Littlefield, Parsons & Co. case decorated with the image of a mother, daughter, cat, and dog, and containing an ambrotype image of a woman, and a case decorated with crossed American flags centering on a shield containing the hatched coat of arms of the United States with fasces and phrygian cap, the cases with the images with paper and stamped marks, the remainder having no apparent marks. Approximate dimensions: Case with scrolled cartouche and fitted interior h. 6.25", w. 5.25", d. 0.75".
Condition
Scattered chips and losses to cases, the rectangular and Colonial scene cases with cracks, the images and frame is detached in the A.P. Critchlow & Co.case, image is defaced/scratched in the Littlefield, Parsons & Co. case, hinge is detached on the case with Union flags, paper labels are stained and toned with foxing, wear to velvet, glass plates appear uncracked.
