Description
Rare Newcomb College Art Pottery Tyg, 1898, high-glaze, designed by Frances Devereux Jones, signed and dated "F.D. Jones/Dec. 13 '98", stamped "NEWCOMB COLLEGE" and stamped "Q" for buff clay body, unusual twisting handles, three reserves decorated by chimera-like figures amongst a background of vapors, above a ring of tridents, surmounted by a Latin phrase translated to "What's good for me, is good for you, is good for our friendship", h. 8 1/2 in., w. incl. handles 8 1/2 in., dia. at foot rim 6 3/8 in. Note: From Poesch, Jessie Newcomb Pottery..., 1984, "Enrolled as a Special Art student from 1889-1893, Frances Jones (Mrs. H.U. Hall) completed her course studies and received her Diploma in Arts in 1894. Miss Jones joined the faculty of the Newcomb Art School for the 1895-96 term as an Instructor in Drawing. She served faithfully in this capacity from 1895-1901 when Miss Amelie Roman replaced her. A talented artist, Miss Jones distinguished herself in the field of pottery decoration", p. 100. She illustrated Grace King's book New Orleans: The Place and the People. She later moved to Pennsylvania and continued studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
