Description
SAUTHIER, Claude Joseph (1736-1802).
A Chorographic Map of the Province of New York in North America.
Engraved map with original hand color in outline.
London: William Faden, 1779.
56 1??2” x 74” sheet, 64 3??4” x 81 3??4” framed.
Visually demonstrating England's secured holdings as a result of its success in the French and Indian War, Claude Joseph Sauthier's A Chorographical Map of the Province of New York in North America is the most accurate depiction of any American colony. Maps such as these were commissioned by William Pitt the Younger to justify to King George III and the Parliament the great expense of their recent victory concluded at the Treaty of Paris in 1763. Later, their exacting detail proved these maps critical to English military operations during the Revolutionary War. When Tryon left North Carolina in mid-1771 to assume the position of British royal governor of New York, Sauthier accompanied him there, and was appointed surveyor for the Province of New York by Tryon. During this period, Sauthier was also instrumental in surveying the boundary between New York and Quebec. Drawn on a scale of five miles to the inch, it is the most detailed printed map of any extensive part of North America published during the Revolutionary period produced by an English officer.
