Description
This poster promotes the United War Work Campaign in its fundraising efforts from November 11-18, 1918. The Campaign was an initiative created by President Woodrow Wilson in which he tasked several private charities such as the YWCA to help raise $170,500,000 to help boost soldiers' morale. The campaign ended up raising over $203 million. The Young Women's Christian Association, or YWCA, was founded in 1855 in England and has been at the forefront of social issues since its founding. When WWI broke out, the YWCA seized on its chance to further its campaign for gender equality in the workplace both at home and on the battlefield. It was the first organization to send female administrative workers overseas to participate in the War Effort. Here we see once such brave woman, proudly administering the critical role of switchboard operator. As a battle rages on in the background, she is calm and focused on her task at hand.Clarence Underwood (1871-1929) was an American painter and illustrator. Originally from New York, he studied at The Art Student's League before living and working abroad in Paris for many years. Upon his return to America, he worked heavily for the New York Press. This is an Original Vintage Poster, not a reproduction. It has been archivally backed onto linen and is in excellent condition.
