Description
(1841-1919) French painter and, with Monet, a leader of the Impressionists. He later changed his style, adopting a more formal perspective. Amusing A.L.S. signed 'Renoir' twice with 'R' initialed postscript, 3pp. 8vo., Paris, Dec. 31, 1899 to Paul Berard (1833-1905), French banker, foreign affairs attaché, and Renoir's most important patron. In part: '...I'm still the same, neither better nor worse, but I don't suffer, apart from my teeth. I have three left and these bitches don't want to leave me alone...'. He then gives advice to his friend for a stay in Jersey: 'Guernsey is pretty, and hardly any French people and walkers or visitors, this island would please you more. French is also spoken everywhere and all currencies are accepted...in Guernsey we had an apartment in the street where Victor Hugo lived, a little higher up. Service and accommodation, 1 pound sterling 25 francs per week 8 years ago or 10 years ago...'. Very good to fine.
