Pierre-Auguste Renoir [par/imputee] (French, 1841-1919). "Montmartre". Oil on canvas. c1874-1880. Signed with the red initial "R" lower right, which Renoir often used in smaller, early paintings. Overall good condition; re-lined long ago, at which point apparently the black border was painted on the new canvas on all four sides (in the artist's hand?); small diagonal raised "ridge" on the recto, which manifests as an indentation verso, possibly caused by the relining process; two nail holes upper edge and two lower edge, in the black border, not in the painting, where apparently the painting was nailed to a wall or other object; two very small "bubbles" upper right, at the top window farthest right, probably from incorrect varnishing; occasional minor craquelure; scattered brown spotting under the varnish; no tears, holes, paint loss; original stretcher; exhibition frame (not included in lot). Image size: 10 3/4 x 15 1/2 in. (273 x 394 mm). By 1874 Renoir had rented a studio in Montmartre, and in 1880 was living at 35 rue St. Georges in the Ninth Arrondissement, just south of Montmartre.
